The Democratic Party wants to see schoolchildren’s faces around America covered with face masks until the federal government decides there is no more reason to wear them. Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat appeared on MSNBC and made the arguement that the U.S. government needs to enforce the measure regardless of state guidelines.
Rep. Espaillat didn’t provide any figures to back up his assertion that masks are “a life-saving measure,” but he argued, “The federal government, at some point, will have to step in.”
The House Democrat also said that “stringent policies that will protect everyone, particularly those people that have already vaccinated themselves and don’t want to have a breakthrough episode, as we see happening all over the country.”
The Wall Street Journal recently published an editorial that lays out the many serious adverse effects that children experience from wearing masks. It was written by Dr. Marty Makary, a professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and Dr. H. Cody Meissner, who is the chief of pediatric infectious diseases at Tufts Children’s Hospital and served on the Food and Drug Administration’s external advisory panel for the Covid-19 vaccines.
“Do masks reduce Covid transmission in children?” the authors ask. “Believe it or not, we could find only a single retrospective study on the question, and its results were inconclusive. Yet two weeks ago the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sternly decreed that 56 million U.S. children and adolescents, vaccinated or not, should cover their faces regardless of the prevalence of infection in their community.”
The authors discuss the risk of Covid to children, which has been discussed elsewhere is extremely low.
“What about the risk of Covid, which mask mandates are intended to ameliorate?” the authors also asked. “The CDC reports that for the week of July 31 the rate of hospitalization with Covid for children 5 to 17 was 0.5 per 100,000, which would amount to roughly 250 patients.”
“The CDC acknowledges that not all of these children were in the hospital for Covid: Viral testing at admission is routine, even for patients who have no Covid symptoms,” the doctors state in a critical point. “Children who do develop Covid symptoms are at minimal risk of ‘long Covid,’ according to a Lancet study published Aug. 3: ‘Almost all children had symptom resolution by 8 weeks, providing reassurance about long-term outcomes’.”
The medical experts also point out the idiosyncratic nature of the CDC’s mask decrees.
“The CDC’s mask decrees are perversely permissive as well as needlessly strict,” they point out. “Cloth masks aren’t nearly as effective as N95 respirators, but the CDC directives ignore the distinction.”
“Many of the face cloth coverings that people wear are not very effective in reducing any of the virus movement in or out,” epidemiologist Michael Osterholm, who served on the Biden transition team’s Covid task force, told CNN. After intense public pressure, Dr. Osterholm walked back in a vague statement that he was not “anti-mask.”
The doctors’ conclusion is as blunt: Requiring children to wear masks for extended periods of time, when they are at little-to-no risk from the virus, is abusive.
“Any child who wants to wear a mask should be free to do so,” the authors state. “But forcing them to make personal, health and developmental sacrifices for the sake of adults who refuse to get immunized is abusive. Before we order the masking of 56 million Americans who are too young to vote and don’t have a lobby, let’s see data showing the benefits and weigh them against the long-term harm.”
We already have a strong sense of the harm being caused by the schools’ enforcement of pandemic measures, which have failed to curb the virus from spreading. The Washington Post called the children being forced into remote learning and day-long mask-wearing a “lost generation.”
“After the U.S. education system fractured into Zoom screens last spring, experts feared millions of children would fall behind,” the Post states. “Hard evidence now shows they were right.”
Forcing children to wear masks, socially distance and participate in distance learning is taking a psychological toll. In October, the Annual State of Mental Health in America showed that anxiety and depression nationwide had hit an all-time high, and was hitting ‘young people the hardest.’
While many are concerned that the Delta variant may lead to a repeat situation for the country, it has proven to be far less dangerous than the first wave of COVID for all demographics.
Mask mandates do not appear to have an appreciable effect on COVID-related case rates or death rates. A recent CDC study showed they have 0.9%-1.9% effect on case rates if used for 100 days. This is miniscule, and in regards to children, statistically inconsequential.
All things considered, therefore, the masks appear to be doing damage to children’s physical health. A lab analysis from the University of Florida showed 11 dangerous pathogens on masks worn by children for just eight hours.
A newly-released study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Pediatrics found that carbon dioxide in masks were at unhealthy levels for children.
“The results found an average of 13,120 and 13,910 parts per million of carbon dioxide in the air inhaled by children while wearing surgical and filtering masks, respectively,” the report said. “Under German law, the carbon dioxide contents of a closed room cannot exceed 2000 ppm, more than six times less than the masked children were inhaling.”
“The results also found that carbon dioxide levels tended to increase the younger the children were, with one 7-year-old’s levels measured at 25,000 ppm,” it continued. “The authors claim that most of the complaints made by children about wearing masks can be explained by increased carbon dioxide levels.”
Children have a right to smile and to see other people smile. They have a right to breathe fresh air. They have a right to live in non-abusive conditions that allow them to be children.
When politicians, bureaucrats, and teachers refuse to even acknowledge that children have such rights, America has a real serious problem on its hands.
