Speaker Nancy Pelosi will have her January 6th “investigation” committee, but it was understood that it would be a completely partisan affair. But at least one GOP name has come up that would give the open-ended witch hunt a fig leaf of bi-partisanship.

The Speaker’s proposal would allow her to appoint 13 members to form a committee that would report on the “facts, circumstances, and causes relating to the January 6, 2021, domestic terrorist attack upon the United States Capitol Complex,” including “facts and causes relating to the preparedness and response of the United States Capitol Police and other Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies in the National Capital Region and other instrumentalities of government, as well as the influencing factors that fomented such an attack on American representative democracy while engaged in a constitutional process.”

The January 6 committee would have subpoena power and could order dispositions without House minority input. The proposal is due to be voted on Wednesday.

The select committee would be open-ended and could last as long as Speaker Pelosi desired. Pelosi could also appoint Republicans to provide a misleading impression of impartiality to the body.

“Top Republicans Pelosi may be considering to put on the committee are likely those most outspoken about former President Donald Trump’s role in the attack, such as Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, whom Republicans ousted from her No. 3 leadership position over her vocal criticism of Trump and the riot earlier this year,” the Washington Examiner reported.

Liz Cheney said on Monday that her appointment would be “up to the Speaker.” Cheney reportedly did not talk to Pelosi about a position on the select committee.

“Even if Pelosi does choose a Republican to fill one of her eight slots and create the committee with six Republicans and seven Democrats, the Democrats on her select committee will have far more power than they would have had in the bipartisan Jan. 6 commission bill blocked by Senate Republicans last month,” the Examiner noted.

Speaker Pelosi claimed that she had no other choice but to  form the committee since the Senate earlier rejected her “bi-partisan” proposal.

“Sadly, as of last week, there remains no prospect for additional votes from Republican Senators to create the National Commission to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol Complex,” Pelosi said in a statement. “January 6th was one of the darkest days in our nation’s history. It is imperative that we establish the truth of that day and ensure such an attack cannot again happen. The Select Committee will investigate and report upon the facts and causes of the attack and report recommendations for preventing any future assault.”

While Pelosi claims that the Capitol riot is one of the “darkest days in our nation’s history,” it should be noted that no one was killed except for a lone Trump supporter named Ashli Babbitt. No one inside the Capitol building was found to be armed with a firearm. There were no “capture and kill” orders. There simply was no attempted “coup.”

The Democratic Party is determined to keep America divided over an event that was marred by a few dozen far-right extremists who mingled with unarmed pro-Trump protesters to create the superficial appearance of a “coup.” The Democratic Party is intent on keeping up the fictional narrative as long as American voters let it.
