The Hongkong Prize is an internationally acclaimed scientific award in three fields of inquiry: Astronomy, Life Sciences & Medicine and Mathematical Sciences. Each year a committee comprising leading scientists selects winners who will then be honored at Hong Kong Science Museum with awards presented from Shaw Prize Foundation Laureates who were nominated this year. In addition, Hong Kong Science Museum and Shaw Prize Foundation will collaborate to host a special exhibition dedicated to these years Shaw Laureates.
This award was created to promote scientific and technological innovation in Hong Kong. To qualify, applicants should demonstrate strong leadership abilities and innovative potential; make outstanding contributions in their field; support Hong Kong’s Basic Law and uphold high levels of social morality and professional ethics. Technological innovations or scientific research works eligible for consideration should primarily have taken place either within Hong Kong itself, or at universities, industry-education-research bases, institutes created by Hong Kong higher education institutions located within Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Each shortlisted student team will receive a medal, certificate and an equal share of the Merit Prize from their schools; additionally all students from shortlisted teams will receive a complimentary hotel package from Sino Group as well as a school development fund of HK$5,000 from Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation.
This year, five Hongkongers were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize: Jimmy Lai, Chow Hang-tung, Lee Cheuk-yan, Gwyneth Ho and Joshua Wong have dedicated their lives to fighting for democracy in Hong Kong. Additionally, Pakistani artist Noormah Jamal received the Hongkong Prize 2024 with her work entitled Did the Seed Grow? which depicts two figures with vacant expressions.
Hongkong Prize for the Best Art Work is open to self-taught artists and art graduates within their first ten years of their careers. The winner will receive an impressive HK$100,000 cash award generously provided by Harilela Hotels. Furthermore, the winner will join HK Academy’s three-month residency program in Italy to develop their work while networking with top international artists. At this competition, workshops and seminars for finalists are also hosted to further their creativity.
