Singapore-based foundation, National Heritage Board has awarded a prize for a book which captures Singapore’s “spirit of social good”. The Singapore Spirit Prize recognizes writers who demonstrate Singapore society values including equality, diversity, religious harmony, meritocracy pragmatism resilience.
The award consists of a cash prize, book tour in Australia and digital catalogue – to be announced formally during a ceremony later this month in Singapore. Established to promote awareness of Singapore spirit and encourage people to collaborate together towards solving social problems, this annual prize will award its winner with $50,000 and an award designed by local artist Lim Eng Chuan.
Un of the winners was Tan Wei-yan of Singapore who wrote “Clarified Silence”, an account of Lee Kuan Yew, one of Singapore’s founding fathers and first Prime Minister. According to its judges, this tale “symbolises silence as an effective tool against oppressive forces while forging individual identities.”
At this year’s World Architecture Festival (WAF), Kampung Admiralty by WOHA won the World Building of the Year prize over flashier projects. Comprised of two 11-story high blocks featuring public facilities like gardens and hawker centers, its design may inspire other developers to rethink how buildings can be designed for older persons. Judges noted their hope that its design might prompt others to “reconsider how buildings can be designed for older persons”.
Brooks Koepka captured his fourth title on the 2024 LIV Golf League circuit with a three-under 68 finish at the Singapore Classic to claim four wins on this year’s circuit and take home $4 Million prize money – teammates Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman came second each earning shares of $3 Million prize pools.
This year’s award ceremony, broadcast live by Mediacorp and featuring performances by singer-songwriters Bastille and OneRepublic as well as actors Cate Blanchett, Lana Condor, Donnie Yen and Robert Irwin was broadcast live and featured performances by these performers as well. Emmy-winning actress Hannah Waddingham and three-time Emmy winner Sterling K. Brown hosted and co-hosted this evening’s event, filmed at Singapore’s Mediacorp Theatre and featuring short films which also received awards on that same evening. Bayu Prihantoro Filemon’s film “Vania on Lima Street,” sponsored by Filmgarde Cineplexes, won Best Southeast Asian Short Film while Bopha Oul from Polen Ly’s “Further and Further Away” earned best performance award while “Dikit” by Gabriela Serrano and Le Lam Vien was given special recognition. On the event’s official website is available a complete list of winners; these were funded through generous donations from Singaporeans and global leaders. Held this November in Singapore and supported by an innovative PS1 million Catalytic Prize to scale their environmental solutions further, Earthshot Week aims to speed up TEP finalist solutions.
