The Hong Kong Prize is a renowned lottery-based award open to people of all ages who submit ideas that promote social progress and wellbeing. This year’s theme was “Better Together”, drawing record entries. Finalists will be showcased in public exhibition, while winners are announced in August – far surpassing even what Nobel Peace Prize recipients receive! This prize offers total payout of HK$20 Million which makes this an unprecedented award!
The newspaper society of Hong Kong Awards are considered Hong Kong’s premier journalism competition, and in 2017 Edwin Gabutina from The Standard’s English headline category won all three prizes he entered for. These included first place for “Total ban on e-cigs may just be one puff away” as well as second and third places respectively for his articles “Nightlife sector in high spirits after liquor tax cut” and “It’s positive: birth rate rebounds back.”
University of Hong Kong reporters won top honours in science news reporting with articles that profiled local scientists in various fields. Furthermore, their news story on the death of a young police officer due to traffic accident earned most votes for crime and law reportage coverage – their team included Kahon Chan, Natalie Wong and Lilian Cheng as reporters.
Hong Kong has long been a strong contender at the Olympic Games, and this year’s Games have not disappointed, with two gold medals won by swimmer Anthony Wong and boxer Chun-ho proving this point. Their accomplishment is both testament to Hong Kong’s talent and hard work as well as an example of how hard work pays off; winning an Olympic medal requires considerable dedication as each medal carries prestige as well as significant monetary prizes; most medalists receive at least $70,000 in prize money upon claiming one.
The Hongkong Prize was established to commemorate the late Mr. Sung Chi-Wing [BSc(Eng) 1969]. Friends and students of the Department of History raised a fund to establish this award for postgraduate students studying Hong Kong history; recipients will be chosen through competitive selection.
